KANDIYAN DANCE TRADITION

 


Kandiyan dance is a dance tradition that orijinated in the centra highlands of sri lanka. It is one of the most important dance traditions in the country .

Areas where this is spread include kandy,udunuwara,yatinuwara,satkorale,satarakorale,Dumbara,and Harispatthuwa.

Speaking of history ,legend has it that the then-reigning king had a leoprd jumping on his body in a dream .at the reqest of the king to cure the diseases .a group of witches came to sri lanka from india and then performed the kohoba kankari peace ritural on the king.


Talking about the costumes ,the kandiyan dancers are adorned with elaborate costumes including headdress.

 



Gatabera is the basic instrument of kandiyan dance and is also used as a percussion instrument .

Dunhida is one of the best in my little sri lanka which is located in badulla District .the name implies the smoke like spray it creates as its water falls in to the rock pool below .the graceful nature of falling the huge flow of water is really enchanting and amusing .cascading through the lush green forest and splashing on the gigantic rocks and innocently moving ahead wetting and fertilizing an enormous area of badulla village .this massive volume of glistening water has some magic in it that calms the tensed mind. 🤩🤩
